Vacancy Announcement Director of the Seward Marine Center and Marine SuperintendentOctober 2017 The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks applications from exceptional candidates for the position of Director of the Seward Marine Center and Marine Superintendent. One of the few Land, Sea, and Space Grant universities in the nation, UAF is noted for research expertise of Alaska’s vast ocean resources which include more than half of the nation’s coastline, three-quarters of the continental shelf and the largest fishery in the world. CFOS has over 50 faculty and more than 150 graduate students engaged in research in Alaskan waters and throughout the world. The university operates thenew ice-capable, Global Class Research Vessel, Sikuliaq. The position is located in Seward, Alaska. Situated at the head of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, Seward is one of Alaska’s oldest and most scenic communities. Known as the ‘Gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park,’ Seward is a picturesque town located 126 miles south of Anchorage. Seward is known for world-class fishing, spectacular sightseeing, and many recreational opportunities. In addition to the university-operated Seward Marine Center, marine research and education is undertaken at the nearby Alaska Sea Life Center.Duties of the position include managing all aspects of vessel operations to ensure R/V Sikuliaq is managed and operated in accordance with NSF, UNOLS, US Coast Guard, and Class requirements to ensure maximum operational readiness commensurate with safe operations. This is an operation with an annual operating and maintenance budget that exceeds $12M each year.Additionally, this position is responsible for managing all aspects of programming of the Seward Marine Center campus, including 7 buildings on 13 acres of land, waterfront with a pier and boat ramp, and a fleet of vehicles and equipment and small boats needed to support ship operations and provide broad based science support. SMC is comprised of approximately 5 staff personnel who support ship operations, the facility & operations, local and visiting scientists, graduate students in Seward, and other University and CFOS missions in Seward. The Seward Marine Center has an annual unrestricted budget of approximately $1M.Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field and 5 years progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The successful candidate will have a strong background in marine operations and at least 7 years of supervisory experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience as a marine superintendent and/or have experience in Arctic operations.
